Embedding Instagram Images Can Cause SEO Issues

In a recent Google Webmaster Webninar, a participant ask John Muller this question – Can you talk a bit about the difference between normal images versus Instagram embeds from Google’s perspective?

The person also mentioned that they changed the images to Instagram embeds on an articles and saw a decrease in rankings, clicks, and other metrics for image search. There was a 43% decrease in image search clicks overnight on that article.

John tested this and noticed that Instagram uses a no index robots meta tag on the embeds! That basically tells Google that there is an image in the iframe but Instagram don’t want those images indexed together with that landing page.

So if you use Instagram and are use Instagram’s embed code, Google most likely will not rank the image on your site in image search.
